Lau and Pomper, Negative Campainging: An Analysis of U.S. Senate Elections
There are links below to two data sets we created for our analyses, the first including mostly demographich information for all 50 states for the even-numbered years between the years 1988 and 2002, the second including that same information, plus data about the senate elections, but only for states with senate elections that year, and only for the years 1992 through 2002.  The latter is the data set we employed for all of the state-level analyses in our book.  Researchers wanting just the campaigning variables, or election outcome data, or data about the nature of the major party senate candidates, can of course extract that data from the larger dataset.
